Outdoor home services: enhancing your exterior living space
Your home extends beyond your back door.
In coastal North Carolina, we spend a lot of time outside. Whether it is grilling on the back deck, relaxing on the porch, or just enjoying the privacy of a fenced yard, your outdoor space is an extension of your living area. However, the same sun, salt, and wind that damage your roof also attack your decks, siding, and fences. Wood rots, vinyl becomes brittle, and fasteners rust. Smith Roofing and Restoration provides a range of outdoor home services to keep your property looking great and functioning correctly.
We apply the same construction standards to our outdoor projects as we do to our roofing work. We understand that a deck is a structural part of your home that needs to be safe and secure. We know that siding is your primary defense against driving rain. We use our background in the construction industry to build durable, high quality exterior improvements that stand up to our specific coastal environment.
Decks and porches
A solid deck adds significant value to your home. We repair existing decks that have loose boards or unstable railings, and we build custom new decks to fit your yard.
Composite decking. We recommend composite materials for many coastal homes. Unlike wood, it does not rot, splinter, or need annual staining. It stands up to the intense UV rays and humidity without warping.
Pressure treated wood. For a traditional look and a lower upfront cost, we build with high grade pressure treated lumber. We use stainless steel or hot dipped galvanized fasteners that resist rust better than standard deck screws.
Safety inspections. If your deck feels wobbly or if the wood feels soft, we can inspect the framing and footings to determine if it can be repaired or if it needs to be replaced for safety.
Siding repair and replacement
Your siding protects your walls from water damage. Cracks, holes, or missing pieces allow moisture to enter your wall cavity which leads to mold and rot. We work with both vinyl and fiber cement siding.
Vinyl siding. This is a popular, low maintenance option. We install high wind rated vinyl siding that is designed to stay locked in place during storms.
Fiber cement siding. For superior durability, we install fiber cement products like Hardie Board. This material is fire resistant, rot resistant, and holds paint much longer than wood.
Fencing and gutters
Privacy fencing. We install wood and vinyl privacy fences. In our windy area, we ensure posts are set deep in concrete and that the fence design allows for wind flow to prevent it from blowing over during storms.
Seamless gutters. Water management is critical. We install seamless gutter systems that direct rainwater away from your foundation. This prevents soil erosion and keeps water from pooling around your home.
Built to last
We do not cut corners on materials. When we build a fence, we use rated lumber. When we hang siding, we use the correct house wrap underneath. We want our work to last. You can trust Smith Roofing and Restoration to handle your exterior projects with honesty and skill. We give you a clear price, we show up when we say we will, and we clean up the job site when we are done.

Here are answers to common questions about decks, siding, and exterior improvements in our area.
In the long run, usually yes. While composite decking costs more upfront than pressure treated wood, you save money and time on maintenance. You never have to sand, stain, or seal it, and it generally lasts much longer in our humid climate.
We typically set fence posts at least two feet deep in concrete, depending on the height of the fence and the soil conditions. This provides the stability needed to withstand high winds common in coastal NC.
Yes. Most new decks require a building permit to ensure they are structurally sound and meet local setback requirements. We handle the permitting process for you so you do not have to worry about the paperwork.
Yes. If the underlying structure is sound, we can replace individual rotten deck boards or railing sections to extend the life of your deck without doing a full replacement.
Fiber cement siding is extremely heavy and rigid making it excellent for wind resistance. However, high quality vinyl siding with a reinforced nailing hem is also rated for high wind speeds and performs very well when installed correctly.
Look for cracks, holes, loose panels, or warping. If you see green mold that keeps coming back quickly, it might mean moisture is trapped behind the siding. High energy bills can also indicate that your siding and insulation are no longer doing their job.
Yes. We can install gutter guards to keep leaves and pine needles out of your system. This reduces the need for cleaning and ensures water flows freely away from your foundation even during heavy storms.
Vinyl siding fades over time so finding an exact match for a repair can be difficult. We can usually find a very close match or we can take a piece from a less visible area of your house to use for the repair and put the new piece in the hidden spot.
